Hemingway Friend Gored in Spanish Bull Ring, Condition Grave

Aug. 5, 1961 - Antonio Ordóñez, the Spanish matador, a close friend of the late Ernest Hemingway, was seriously gored in a Malaga bullring today. Señor Ordóñez underwent surgery that lasted an hour. A medical bulletin described his condition as grave. The 28-year-old matador, whom Mr. Hemingway portrayed as one of Spain's great bullfighting heroes, was gored when he stepped on the red cloth or "muleta" as he was about to kill his second bull.
