Feb. 7, 1962 - Following are three highlights of President Kennedy’s news conference today:
Nuclear Testing — He said the U.S. would decide this month whether to resume testing in the atmosphere. An effective treaty banning tests, he said, must give assurances not only against Soviet testing but also against secret Soviet preparations to test.
Education — He praised the Senate for passing a provision to established 212,000 college scholarships and urged Congress to retain this feature.
Politics — He jokingly suggested that Governor Rockefeller was reaching for a position farther Right than that of Senator Goldwater. He thought it was “too early” to tangle in public with George Romney, a new political contender from Michigan.
