Highlights of President Kennedy’s Press Conference

Dec. 12, 1962 - Here are some highlights of President Kennedy’s news conference today:

Tax Cut Plans — “We intend to go ahead with our program. Then it will be up to the Ways and Means Committee and the Congress to make a judgment as to whether they will accept it.”

Red Missiles in Cuba — “We will take every step necessary to make sure that these missiles are not re-introduced into Cuba or the offensive weapons are not re-introduced.”

Adlai Stevenson — “This interpretation of Governor Stevenson’s position [allegedly opposing the Cuba blockade] did not come from a member of the National Security Council. I satisfied myself on that. I never heard anyone characterize Governor Stevenson’s position in that way, and I am satisfied that no one did.”

Alliance for Progress — “The problems of Latin America are staggering — lack of resources and overdependence on one or two commodities. But these governments in many cases are making a very determined effort under staggering difficulties.”
