Sept. 16, 1962 - As the California gubernatorial campaign between the Democrat incumbent, Edmund G. Brown (left), and the Republican challenger, Richard M. Nixon (right), gains steam, Hollywood figures are starting to choose sides. Mrs. Milton Berle, wife of the comedian, is in charge of supplying celebrities for Democratic party occasions this year. On the list are her husband, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante, Joey Bishop, Edie Adams, Mort Sahl, Janet Leigh, Steve Allen, Jo Stafford, Sammy Davis Jr., Phil Silvers, and Red Buttons. The Republican contingent is also impressive. On its roster are James Stewart, Red Skelton, Rosalind Russell, John Wayne, Dick Powell, June Allyson, Robert Young, Tony Martin, Cyd Charisse, Irene Dunne, Johnny Mathis, Louise Beavers, and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. The first major Republican event will be on Oct. 8, when former President Eisenhower is guest of honor at a seven-city closed-circuit T.V. rally.
