Hurricane Carter Scores TKO Victory over Harry Scott in London

Mar. 9, 1965 - Rubin (Hurricane) Carter achieved only half his goal tonight when he scored a technical knockout over iron-jawed Harry Scott in London.

Winning was Rubin’s first objective, but knocking the Briton off his feet was another. Carter failed to achieve that goal, although Scott was bleeding profusely from a cut above the left eye when referee Harry Gibbs stopped the fight in the ninth round.

“He is a very strong and game boy,” Carter said. “He had the best of the infighting, and I offered him a return on the spot. Next time, I hope he will let me treat him like I wanted to — knock him down.”

“I was very strong and could have gone on all night,” Scott said. Scott has never been knocked off his feet in 40 bouts. “Carter’s left was a flick, not a jab, and you could see the big ones coming,” Scott remarked.

Carter opened the cut over Scott’s eye in the fourth, and the referee visited the Briton’s corner twice between the fourth and the ninth.

At the start of the ninth, it was obvious that the fight would be stopped if the eye became worse. Carter quickly drew new blood with a series of lefts to the head, and the end came.

Carter weighed 155½, and Scott scaled 161¾. Carter was paid $3,500 against Scott’s $2,800.
