Sept. 5, 1962 - Jack Dempsey was resting comfortably today at Chicago’s Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital after surgery for an old back injury. The attending physician, Dr. Frank Theis, said the injury to the former world heavyweight champion dates back to the Luis Firpo fight held at New York’s Polo Grounds on Sept. 14, 1923. Eighty thousand fans watched Firpo knock Dempsey through the ropes (pictured) and out of the ring in the first round of the fight. However, Dempsey clambered back into the ring before he was counted out and knocked out the Argentine in the second round. Dempsey lost his title to Gene Tunney on Sept. 23, 1926 and was defeated in the rematch as well.
