Jackie Robinson Leads Fund Drive to Rebuild Georgia Churches

Sept. 13, 1962 - About $11,000 has been donated to rebuild the two Negro churches destroyed by fire near Albany, Ga. The Atlanta Constitution said today that nearly $1,000 had been contributed to its fund. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference reported donations of about $10,000 to the drive headed by Jackie Robinson. The former baseball star visited the ruins of the churches a few hours after the fires and announced on the spot his intention to lead a fundraising drive.
