Jan. 19, 1963 - The director of Japan’s defense agency has received information that Red China has two nuclear devices, a spokesman said today. The newspaper Yomiuri also quoted informed sources as saying the Red Chinese might even have four atomic bombs by now. But the Chinese have not tested them and may need several years to turn them into practical weapons even if tests are successful, the defense spokesman said. Nuclear experts in Washington did not dispute that Red China is working on test devices, but held to their estimate that Chinese scientists would not be able to fabricate bombs until at least 1966. The Chinese, the experts pointed out, have the handicap of no experience of their own and no technical aid from the Soviet Union. Further, the Chinese have no missiles, and only light bombers to deliver a nuclear weapon.
