June 13, 1962 - John (Hondo) Havlicek, captain of the Ohio State basketball team last season, signed today with the Cleveland Browns of the NFL. Two professional basketball champions — the Boston Celtics of the NBA and the Cleveland Pipers of the American Basketball League — had drafted Havlicek and had tried to sign him. The Browns said that four baseball teams also were interested in the 22-year-old, 6-foot-5-inch, 205-pound athlete. They are the Indians, Yankees, Phillies, and Pirates. Coach Paul Brown said he was considering using Havlicek as a flanking halfback or as a safety. Havlicek played first base for Ohio State in baseball, but his last football action was as a quarterback for Bridgeport (Ohio) High School, where he won all-state honors.
