Justice Black, Alabaman, Rules on Desegregation in Mississippi

Sept. 10, 1962 - Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black (pictured right with Chief Justice Earl Warren in 1954) ruled today that the University of Mississippi must admit a Negro for the first time this fall. Justice Black nullified a series of orders by Judge Ben F. Cameron of the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that would have postponed the admission of James H. Meredith. Mississippi is one of three states that have not permitted any school integration. The two others are South Carolina and Justice Black’s home state of Alabama. Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett pledged today to prevent Mr. Meredith’s admission to the university. He did not specify what action he would take.
