Aug. 27, 1962 - The Dodgers lead the Giants by two-and-a-half games in the National League standings, but apprehension hangs heavy over Chavez Ravine. Sandy Koufax’s tender left index finger won’t toughen up. The Dodgers’ pennant hopes appear only slightly stronger than Sandy’s finger. Against the Reds this week, manager Walter Alston plans to use Johnny Podres, Don Drysdale, and Stan Williams. Koufax has doubts that he will pitch again this season. The finger, which went numb six weeks ago, is raw after having been lanced. Skin has formed but won’t take on a callus. Sandy can barely grip a ball. Without his grip, the Dodgers are hard-pressed to keep theirs.
