Jan. 29, 1962 - A funeral service was held today in Naples for Charles (Lucky) Luciano. After the requiem mass, his body was put in a cemetery chapel to await a decision on whether burial in the United States would be permitted. Luciano’s brother Bartolo — who keeps the family name of Lucania — requested such permission of the U.S. Consulate. Luciano was deported from the U.S. in 1946 because of his criminal record. There were many Luciano friends at the funeral. Some had been deported from the U.S. as he was. Joe (Cock-Eyed John) Raimondo sat among the 300 mourners. So did Nick Di Marzio and Joe Di Giorgio. With them were Italian and American narcotic agents, who made movies of everyone present. Luciano died of a heart attack last Friday night. Long before that, agents had been trying to find a link between the 64-year-old former New York vice king and a world-wide narcotics ring.
