Aug. 23, 1964 - NBC reported today that a national sampling of voters showed 67% for President Johnson and 28% for Senator Barry Goldwater. Five percent were undecided.
NBC commissioned Elmo Roper and Associates to make the survey. The company said that the 39-point advantage was the largest ever found at this stage of a modern Presidential campaign.
President Johnson has the support of 83% of the voters who call themselves Democrats. Senator Goldwater is supported by 53% of those who call themselves Republicans.
Among groups of voters, President Johnson scored as follows: Negroes, 97%; Jews, 86%; union members, 76%; and Roman Catholics, 73%.
The NBC-Roper poll was taken two weeks ago, after the United States air strike against North Vietnam torpedo boat facilities. The poll covered 2,114 “likely voters.” It attempted to screen out those not likely to vote.
