Lions Destroy Steelers with Offensive Showcase

Sept. 16, 1962 - The Detroit Lions displayed their finest offense in years today and crushed the Pittsburgh Steelers, 45-7, in an NFL opener. Milt Plum’s passing and the running of Nick Pietrosante and Danny Lewis carried the Lions to three touchdowns in the second quarter, one in the third, and two in the fourth. Plum, who was acquired from Cleveland this year, passed for 3 touchdowns and completed 21 of 30 pass attempts in his debut with Detroit. Pat Studstill dazzled a sunbathed crowd of 46,651 in Detroit with a 34-yard punt return and a 59-yard runback of a kickoff.
