Liston and Clay To Fight in February, Multiple Sites Being Considered

Oct. 31, 1963 - Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay (pictured with neighbors in Louisville) will sign Wednesday at Denver for their heavyweight title fight in February, it was learned today. The fight will be staged on either Feb. 10, 11, 17, or 18. Cities that will bid for the 15-round fight include Las Vegas, Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, Atlantic City, and Minneapolis. Regardless of the site, Liston’s second defense of his heavyweight crown will be promoted by Intercontinental Promoters, Inc., of which Liston and Bob Nilon are the chief stockholders. There will be no home television, but negotiations are already under way for Sportsvision, Inc., with headquarters in New York, to show the bout in theaters and other establishments. Negotiations for a Liston-Clay fight have been on since the second Liston-Floyd Patterson bout at Las Vegas in July. Neither boxer will have any other bouts before their meeting in February.
