Mar. 16, 1963 - The world championship heavyweight fight between champion Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson was postponed indefinitely today because of a recurrence of a knee injury Liston suffered three weeks ago swinging a golf club. Jack Nilon (left), Liston’s advisor, said postponement of the April 10 Miami Beach bout had to be made to determine whether an operation was necessary on Liston’s left knee. “I don’t know how long the fight will have to be postponed, but we will not permit Liston to fight until the knee is in perfect condition,” he said. “He will work in the gym in Chicago to determine if the knee will hold up or whether an operation for torn cartilage is necessary. If an operation is necessary, it will be 8 to 10 weeks before he can train again.”
