Oct. 14, 1963 - The press representative of heavyweight champion Sonny Liston (pictured in Finland in August) said today that Liston would fight Cassius Clay for the title “some time in February.” Milt Willner, a Denver boxing promoter and Liston’s press aide, said he and Liston had looked over the prospects of holding the bout in Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles, and they were favorable. Liston earlier turned down a bout with Clay this year because of tax considerations. Willner said Liston hopes to fight Englishman Brian London this year, but anybody else “will have to wait in line until after he fights Clay.” Willner said today that British Empire heavyweight champion Henry Cooper had turned down a bid to fight Liston in Denver this winter, but he hoped London would take up the challenge.
