Nov. 9, 1962 - The Los Angeles Times carried a statement by its publisher, Otis Chandler, yesterday in response to Richard M. Nixon’s self-described “last press conference,” in which he harshly criticized The Times and the press in general as biased and unfair. The newspaper’s statement read: “The Times has supported Richard Nixon in each and every one of his campaigns — for the House of Representatives, for the U.S. Senate, twice for the Vice Presidency, for President in 1960, and for Governor of California in 1962. In this recent campaign, The Times published three editorials and seven editorial cartoons supporting Mr. Nixon’s candidacy. We continue to believe that he was the best-qualified candidate for Governor, as we said in our endorsement editorial of October 21.”
