Manhunt Underway for Iowa Man Who Killed Five

May 27, 1962 - A young man ambushed and killed his aunt and uncle in their Iowa farm-house last night, then drove four cousins home from a dance and killed three of them, Sheriff John Wallerich of Martinsburg said today. A Midwest alert was sent out for Gayno Gilbert Smith, 24, wanted on a murder warrant. Those killed in the shootings were Andy McBeth, 50; his wife, Dora, 40; their twin son and daughter, Amos and Anna, 20, and a divorced daughter, Donna Kellogg, 17. The search for Smith was started when another daughter, Patty, 15, stumbled into a neighbor’s farm home and said, “Gayno shot us.” She had a gunshot wound in the shoulder. The six-month-old son of Donna Kellogg was found unharmed in his crib. The sheriff said Patty was unable to provide any reason for the shootings.
