Maris Hits No. 55 as Yankees Trim Tribe, 7-3

Sept. 7, 1961 - Roger Maris hit his 55th homer of the season as the Yankees beat the Indians, 7-3. Maris's wallop was one of 11 assorted hits that upended the 5th-place Tribe. The Yankees are now nine games ahead of the Tigers, who dropped their seventh straight today. Maris is now eight games ahead of Bambino in the home run chase for sixty. Mickey Mantle is one game behind Ruth.
