Sept. 9, 1961 - Roger Maris blasted another drive into the right-field bleachers at the Stadium today. It was Roger's 56th homer of the year and brought him within 4 of Babe Ruth's record of 60. Only 2 players have hit more in one season, Hank Greenberg and Jimmie Foxx with 58. Despite Maris's homer in the seventh inning, the Yankees still trailed the Indians by three runs. In the last of the ninth, however, the Yanks suddenly scored four times. That gave the Bombers a whirlwind 8-7 triumph over Cleveland. Maris's blow put Roger 6 games ahead of the Ruthian pace of 1927. He now has 12 games remaining to reach or pass the record within the 154-game limit set by Commissioner Ford Frick.
