Mays, Marichal Shine as Giants Beat Dodgers, 3-0

Sept. 5, 1962 - Juan Marichal pitched 4-hit shutout ball until he was injured in the sixth inning and Willie Mays drove in two runs with a pair of doubles and a single as the Giants defeated the Dodgers today in Los Angeles, 3-0, before 54,395. Bob Bolin relieved Marichal, who twisted his right instep in the sixth, and held the Dodgers scoreless for three innings. The win boosted the Giants to two-and-a-half games behind the league-leading Dodgers. Marichal was credited with the victory — his 18th. Johnny Podres lost his 11th against 12 wins. The Dodgers gave the huge crowd hope in the ninth with singles by Jim Gilliam and Tommy Davis, but Bolin got the side out on Ron Fairly’s grounder to Orlando Cepeda. Fleet-footed Dodger shortstop Maury Wills started the Dodger first with a single to left. As the crowd yelled for him to steal his 77th base, Marichal picked him off with a perfect snap throw to Orlando Cepeda. It was only the third time Maury has been picked off all year.
