Apr. 28, 1962 - Five home runs helped Casey Stengel’s Mets down the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-6, today at the Polo Grounds. Manager Gene Mauch’s Phillies belted four homers. These heroic shots eventually were nullified, however, when Chris Short released a wild pitch that allowed two Mets to cross the plate at the close of a six-run uprising in the sixth. That rally put New York ahead, 7-6, and ahead they stayed. A jubilant gathering of 10,491 witnessed the Mets’ first home victory and the second of their young history. They have lost 12 games.
