Missionaries Captured by Viet Cong Still Missing

June 1, 1962 - Vietnamese military patrols searched the highlands of southern Darlac Province today for three American missionaries captured Wednesday night in a raid by Communist guerrillas on a leprosarium near Banmethuot. They reported no trace of the missionaries, who had been bound and taken away in a stolen automobile by the Viet Cong. The raiders held 250 lepers in a state of terror for three hours. They finally departed after ransacking medical stores for penicillin, drugs, and surgical equipment. Missing were Dr. Eleanor Ardel Vietti (center) of Houston, Tex.; the Rev. Archie Mitchell (right) of Ellensburg, Wash., and Daniel Gerber (left), a conscientious objector from Dalton, Ohio.
