Feb. 26, 1962 - The Los Angeles Dodgers came up with an innovation today: they used umpires in batting practice. Manager Walter Alston, pleased with the results of the experiment, plans to continue the practice daily. “We swung at a lot of bad pitches last year, and I hope to correct this,” Alston said. “I think we have a good start.” Three Dodgertown staff umpires called every pitch, even when a batter swung.
