MLB: Johnny Podres Signs New Contract with Dodgers

Jan. 22, 1962 - Johnny Podres (far right), who had the best winning percentage among National League pitchers with an 18-5 record for .783 last season, today signed for close to $30,000 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. General Manager E.J. (Buzzie) Bavasi reported that the southpaw received a sizable salary increase for 1962. Podres was said to have received $25,000 last season. “In many respects, 1961 was Podres’ best year even if he didn’t get a chance at some world series heroics,” Bavasi commented. The dean of the Dodger pitching staff at the age of 29, Podres in 8 years with the club has won 100 games.
