MLK: “Reign of Terror” Being Waged on Mississippi Negroes

Oct. 5, 1961 - The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. charged today that "an apparent reign of terror" was being waged against Negroes taking part in a voter registration drive in two south Mississippi counties. Dr. King wired Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy "urgently requesting" an immediate investigation by Federal authorities of the situation at McComb, Miss. Authorities arrested 113 Negro high school students and 3 workers for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) today after the students marched on City Hall to protest discrimination. Authorities said they made the arrests after fighting broke out and "several hundred white persons" had gathered downtown.
