Feb. 21, 1962 - Frank Overton (left), stage and film actor, has been signed by Alan Pakula, the producer, for the role of the sheriff in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize novel now before the cameras at Universal. Mr. Overton’s Broadway credits include “The Desperate Hours” (1954), “The Trip to Bountiful” (1953), “Truckline Cafe” (1945) and “Jacobowsky and the Colonel” (1943). He has appeared on numerous television programs since, the early 1950s, including a 1959 episode of “The Twilight Zone” with Gig Young called “Walking Distance.”
