July 19, 1962 - Howard Hawks’ “Hatari!” (Paramount) attained a box-office gross of $43,953 for its first week at New York’s DeMille Theatre, according to the company. The figure is reportedly the highest for a non-holiday opening week at the DeMille since “Psycho” two years ago. In the film, a group of men led by Sean Mercer (John Wayne) trap wild animals in Africa and sell them to zoos before the arrival of a female wildlife photographer (Elsa Martinelli) threatens to change their ways.
