Movies: “Lord of the Flies”

July 24, 1963 - “Lord of the Flies,” a film based upon the 1954 novel by William Golding, will have an invitational premiere the evening of Aug. 19 at New York’s Loew’s Tower East Theater. Adapted and directed by Peter Brook, the drama was photographed entirely on location in Puerto Rico in 1961 with a cast of 32 non-professional youngsters. The story deals with 30 schoolboys marooned on an island, where the behavior of the majority degenerates into utter savagery. As with Golding's book, the pessimistic theme of the film is that fear, hate, and violence are inherent in the human condition – even when innocent children are placed in seemingly idyllic isolation.
