Movies: Lumet to Direct "Long Day's Journey Into Night"

Aug. 23, 1961 - Sidney Lumet has been signed to direct the film version of Eugene O'Neill's "Long Day's Journey into Night." The film will be produced in New York next month, at a budget of $350,000. Mr. Lumet, who staged the adaptation of "The Iceman Cometh" last season for "The Play of the Week," recently returned from Paris, where he completed the direction of the film based on Arthur Miller's play, "A View from the Bridge." Eugene O'Neill posthumously received the 1957 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for "Long Day's Journey into Night." The work concerns the Tyrone family, consisting of parents James and Mary and their sons Edmund and Jamie. The story is semi-autobiographical.
