July 30, 1963 - Lee Tracy will repeat his Broadway role in the film version of Gore Vidal’s 1960 play, “The Best Man.” Henry Fonda, Kevin McCarthy, Cliff Robertson, and Margaret Leighton are also in the cast of the political drama, which Franklin Schaffner will direct for United Artists. The story details the seamy political maneuverings behind the nomination of a presidential candidate. The two candidates vying for the nomination will be played by Fonda and Robertson. Vidal based Mr. Fonda’s character on Adlai Stevenson, current U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. and loser of two presidential contests to former President Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956. Robertson’s character is based on the late Senator Joseph McCarthy.
