Sept. 1, 1963 - “The Cardinal,” a film dealing with religious conflicts within the Roman Catholic Church, will have its world premiere on December 11 under the sponsorship of Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston. Cardinal Cushing has agreed to attend the Boston opening of the film, which encountered opposition from Roman Catholic leaders before and during its production. The film is understood to deal with many of the church’s problems, including integration, abortion, and religious intermarriage. It recounts the rise of a young Irish Bostonian from the priesthood to high rank in the church. The film, with Tom Tryon, Romy Schneider, and John Huston in leading roles, will begin a reserved-seat engagement at New York’s DeMille Theater December 12.
