Aug. 29, 1961 - "The Great War," an Italian-made drama, is opening at New York's Trans-Lux Theatre (with subtitles). Vittorio Gassman and Silvana Mangano have leading roles in the release directed by Mario Monicelli. The film tells the story of an odd couple of army buddies in World War I. While played on a comedic register, it does not hide from viewers the horrors of trench warfare.
