Movies: “Tom Jones”

Sept. 16, 1963 - The British screen version of Henry Fielding’s classic novel, “Tom Jones,” will have its American premiere on Oct. 7 at New York City’s Cinema I. An invitational showing of the 18th-century romantic drama on Oct. 6 will be attended by Albert Finney (left), who plays the title role; by Tony Richardson, who produced and directed the film; and by other cast members. “Tom Jones” was adapted by John Osborne, the playwright and screenwriter responsible for “Look Back in Anger” and other works in the British “Angry Young Man” school of dramas. It was filmed in color. Susannah York, Hugh Griffith, Joan Greenwood, Diane Cilento (right), and Edith Evans are among the featured players. The story deals with the romantic and chivalrous adventures of Tom Jones in 18th-century England.
