July 28, 1962 - A film that Hollywood thinks will become one of the great scene-stealing competitions in motion-picture history was started last week. The picture is “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” It stars Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, with Robert Aldrich as director. The two famous actresses, notorious for temperament during their Oscar-winning days, have never appeared together in the same movie. (Both were in the cast of the multi-starred “Hollywood Canteen,” but did not perform together.) Both actresses professed to be puzzled at the speculation that they might not get along. They regarded such thoughts as aspersions on their professionalism. Mr. Aldrich avoided comment on potential friction and insisted he would keep the picture to its 30-day schedule and $600,000 budget.
