Mar. 3, 1963 - William Wyler has been signed to produce and direct the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music,” according to an announcement by Darryl F. Zanuck, president of 20th Century-Fox. The picture is scheduled to go before the cameras Oct. 1. It will be shot at the studio with some exteriors filmed in Austria. “The Sound of Music,” which will be Wyler’s first film since “The Children’s Hour,” is a romantic musical account of the life of the Trapp Family, concert singers. It is based on the Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel (pictured), which opened in 1959 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
