N.Y.C. Traffic Commissioner Barnes Sounds Off on Women Drivers

June 18, 1962 - New York Traffic Commissioner Henry A. Barnes said today in a radio broadcast about women drivers: “I love them all, but —.” Men generally drive faster than women, and this can be risky, Mr. Barnes said. But women tend to be “cautious, too cautious,” which is an equal hazard. Furthermore, he added: “When a woman driver puts out her hand, you never know whether she is feeling to see if the window is open, drying her nail polish, or making a turn.” The Commissioner also remarked that he found it amazing that people can drive in the city without getting killed.
