NAACP Protests Segregating Seating Policy at Houston Stadium

Sept. 8, 1961 - An official of the NAACP said today that Negroes playing with the Oakland Raiders would be asked not to cross picket lines tomorrow night at Houston's Jeppesen Stadium when the Raiders meet the Houston Oilers. Francis Williams, president of the Houston NAACP, said pickets would protest segregating seating policies at the public schools stadium. "Houston is the only team in the league that enforces seating segregation," Williams said. The Oilers lease the stadium from the Houston independent school district. Negro groups protested the policy several times during Oiler games last season.
