NBC Signs Negro Performer Ena Hartman to Long-Term Talent Contract

Aug. 24, 1962 - Ena Hartman has been signed to what is believed to be the first long-term talent development contract for a Negro performer. NBC has given a five-year television contract to Miss Hartman, a fashion and photographers’ model, under its program for developing new talent. As with other successful applicants, she has had no experience in acting or other performing, but she impressed network officials with her potential. Miss Hartman, who had been paying her way through drama training, is now taking drama and vocal instruction with NBC footing the bills.
