Nelson Mandela Sentenced to Five Years in Jail

Nov. 7, 1962 - Nelson Mandela (pictured), former secretary general of the banned African National Congress on South Africa and Secretary of the African National Council, was sentenced in Pretoria today to a total of five years in jail. The sentences were three years for incitement to strike and two for having left South Africa without a passport. Magistrate W.A. Van Helsdingen said he found Mr. Mandela had been the leader and instigator of a stay-at-home campaign last May by African workers. It is an offense for certain classes of South Africans to be absent from work without cause.
