New Folk-Music Group "Peter, Paul and Mary" Has Commercial Aims

Dec. 27, 1961 - A new folk-music group performing at New York’s Blue Angel is called Peter, Paul and Mary. Sex appeal as a keystone for a folk-song group was the idea of the group’s manager, Albert Grossman, who searched for months for “the girl” until he decided on Mary Travers about a year ago. Miss Travers sings along with Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey. Despite the seasonal appropriateness of their names, Peter, Paul and Mary do no Christmas caroling. Their folk-song arrangements reflect an earnest effort to make a commercial product out of basically non-commercial music.
