New York Film Critics Vote "West Side Story" Best Picture

Dec. 28, 1961 - “West Side Story” was voted the best motion picture of the year in the 27th annual poll of The New York Film Critics. This was the first time a musical had been awarded the group’s top prize. Sophia Loren won the year’s top actress accolade for her performance in the Italian drama, “Two Women.” Another foreigner, Maximilian Schell, took the male acting honors for his work in “Judgment at Nuremberg.” This Stanley Kramer production also captured the best screenwriting laurels. Robert Rossen, who produced, directed, and collaborated on the script of “The Hustler,” was voted the year’s best director. Oddly enough, this drama, released by 20th Century-Fox, was not even a nominee in the canvassing for best picture of the year.
