New York Rangers Sign "Outstanding" French-Canadian Player, Rod Gilbert

Aug. 1, 1961 - Rod Gilbert, a 21-year-old right wing considered one of the best young players in many years, today signed with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League. Muzz Patrick, vice president and general manager, said Gilbert had signed an "excellent contract" to make the jump from junior to professional hockey. Gilbert, of French-Canadian extraction, lives in Montreal. Emile (Cat) Francis, his coach, called Gilbert "the outstanding player in junior hockey last season."
