NFL: Packers Star Paul Hornung Called to Active Duty by Army

Oct. 17, 1961 - Paul Hornung (pictured), the leading scorer in the NFL, was called to active duty by the Army today, together with Ray Nitschke, his teammate on the Green Bay Packers. Though both Hornung and Nitschke are members of the Army Reserve, their call to active duty shocked the Packers, who are tied for first place in the league’s Western Conference. The 14th Army Corps headquarters in Minneapolis said that Hornung had been ordered to report to the 896th Engineer Co. at Fort Riley, Kan., on Oct. 30. Nitschke was told to report to the 32nd Division, a recently activated Wisconsin National Guard unit, on Nov. 2. There are two games on the Packer schedule before the two are due to report.
