NFL: Vikings Upset Bears, 37-13 as Rookie Tarkenton Shines

Sept. 17, 1961 - The Minnesota Vikings, paced by a rookie quarterback, Fran Tarkenton, today scored a major upset in their first NFL contest by trouncing the Chicago Bears, 37-13. The former University of Georgia star accounted for 5 touchdowns - throwing for 4 and scoring the 5th on a 3-yard run - before 32,326 fans in Bloomington, Minn. The Bears, who made short work of the Vikings during the exhibition season, were not in the game in the second half.
