Nine Men Indicted in Firebombing of Freedom Rider Bus

Sept. 1, 1961 - Nine men accused of bombing the first "freedom rider" bus to enter Alabama have been indicted by a Federal grand jury. The bombing was on May 14 outside Anniston as the bus was on its way from Atlanta to Birmingham. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy announced the two-count indictment in Washington today. The FBI, he added, had arrested seven of the men. Another is in jail on burglary charges, and the ninth is in a hospital. Seventeen persons were aboard the bus when it arrived at Anniston. A mob of whites stoned the vehicle, followed it out of town, and tossed an incendiary bomb through an open window.
