Nixon Agrees To Debate Gov. Brown in California Gubernatorial Race

May 22, 1962 - Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon has committed himself to face his opponent on a national television panel in his fight for the California governorship, he said today. Many observers felt that Mr. Nixon suffered in his televised debates with John F. Kennedy in the 1960 national election campaign, but Mr. Nixon indicated he was unafraid of facing incumbent Democratic Gov. Edmund G. Brown before TV cameras. He said he had agreed to debate Mr. Brown on the “Meet the Press” television show in October on an “if-and-when” basis — if Mr. Nixon wins the Republican nomination for Governor at the June 5 primary and qualifies for the run-off against the incumbent Democrat in November. Mr. Brown has only nominal opposition in the primary.
