Nuclear Test Set for Monday

June 14, 1962 - A high-altitude nuclear test in the Pacific area has been set for next Monday, the Atomic Energy Commission announced today. The announcement said the device would be detonated in the Johnston Island testing area southwest of Hawaii at an altitude of “hundreds of kilometers.” A kilometer is about five-eighths of a mile. The explosion, with a force of about 1 million tons of TNT, is scheduled for between 11 p.m. June 18 and 2:30 a.m. June 19, Hawaiian standard time.
