On Sale Today: “Do You Want to Know a Secret” by The Beatles

Mar. 23, 1964 - On sale in U.S. record stores today is the latest single by the Beatles, “Do You Want to Know a Secret.” The B-side is “Thank You Girl.”

“Do You Want to Know a Secret” was written primarily by John Lennon, but George Harrison sings the lead vocals. The song was inspired by “I’m Wishing,” a song from Walt Disney’s 1937 animated film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” which Lennon’s mother, Julia, sang to him as a child. The first two lines of “I’m Wishing” — “Want to know a secret? Promise not to tell?” — come right after the opening lyrics of “Do You Want to Know a Secret.”

Lennon and Harrison both play acoustic guitars on the recording, which was completed on February 11, 1963.
